Project Outline.

Augmentedreality (AR) is a term for a live direct or anindirect view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, graphicsor GPS data. Augmentation is conventionally in real-time and in semantic context with environmentalelements, such as sports scores on TV during a match. With the help of advancedAR technology (e.g. adding computer visionand object recognition) the information about the surrounding realworld of the user becomes interactiveand digitally manipulable.

 

Thistechnology is favorably welcomed by game industry and private companies toprovide users detailed information that cannot be seen in the real world.

Within thecontemporary city, augmented reality is mostly used for Viewing Street throughsmart phone camera, where user can see pop-up information windows on the screenaccording to the embedded code within the scenery of the city. In other words,it is simply “viewingthings in our real world and getting information back in real time” through their mobile device or othercomputing systems.

 

Here, I amcritically questioning how the augmentedreality can explain one city’s reality. How the city can be augmented by certain kind of information? Drawingon these questions I would like to examine how the existing augmented realitycan be differentiated from each person’s perceived ‘reality’. Thus, by creatingmy personal augmented reality of the city of Seoul (with my personal selectionsof the statistic facts), I would like to talk about hidden reality, that is contrastedby the existing augmented reality and ofcourse, physical ‘reality’.

 

Visually,I am thinking of creating a small simple travel guide book of Seoul, the actualbook would be conventional guide book conveying cliché pictures anddescriptions of Seoul. (Information will be from one of the augmented realityapplications - google maps).

However,each page contains the code which will show my personal augmented realitythrough the monitor. New visual data will be shown through the monitor, accordingthe information on the page to compare with the actual book and virtualcontents.

Throughthis process, I am expecting reader to understand how existing augmentedreality can be subjectively, functionally and commercially selected by cooperations and under the superficial surface, how the striking stories arehidden. Those are fact that cannot be changed or covered, yet, they are only augmentedin the virtual space so that reader can simply ignore or consider them asvirtual simulations. I am also hoping to create virtual and real paradox bythis installation format.

 

Thecontents of the book will be simple, and divided into five or six sections-Land, Population, Sightseeing, Shopping, Food, Culture, People.. but eachsection will contain striking facts that only can be seen in the virtual spacethrough the monitor.
